This is Sophie, a female Havanese. She was rescued from the Miami Dade shelter and as you can see, she's in pretty bad shape. She is emaciated, has skin lesions on her belly (possibly fireant bites), bilateral ear infections and kennel cough. When she arrived at Pekes and Pals she wasn't able to walk because she had huge mats between her paw pads and her nails were growing into her pads. Additionlly, she has cataracts and is badly in need of dental care. It appears this little girl was on her own for quite awhile.
Peggy is working her magic, however, and Sophie is eating and drinking well. Peggy's treating her little belly and ear infections and when Sophie is well enough, Peggy will take her to Dr. D. for an evaluation. We will post updates on her recovery.
UPDATE August 6, 2010: Unfortunately little Sophie quit eating and it was necessary to have a feeding tube inserted surgically. She is gaining strength daily and she actually ate a little dry food yesterday, her first in over two weeks! Sophie also has pneumonia which Peggy is aggressively treating.
